Back Bay Real Estate & Information

Back Bay is an official neighborhood of Boston, resting comfortably along the banks of the Charles River, directly across from Cambridge, and sparkling with its distinctive rows of Victorian brownstone homes, upscale shopping boutiques and towering office buildings.

In addition to being a wonderful place to live, the neighborhood of Back Bay is home to the Boston Public Library, the Institute of Contemporary Art and the signature skyscraper of the Boston skyline: the John Hancock Tower.

Shopping and Dining
Living in an urban area certainly has advantages, including virtually limitless shopping and dining options, and Back Bay’s eateries and retailers are outstanding. Back Bay is associated with unique and stylish shops and restaurants while also offering noted national names. The Shops at Prudential Center and Copley Square beckon shoppers, and some of the high-end boutiques in these areas include Chanel, Mont Blanc, Coach, Lord & Taylor and Sephora.

Be sure to visit Newbury St., suggested to be the prettiest street in all of Back Bay. It is lined with several diverse restaurants and shops making it a great place to take a stroll. The beginning of Newbury St. flows right into Boston Common which is Boston’s Central Park of New York.

You will also find a wide variety of restaurants in Back Bay. Popular eateries include Haru, serving Japanese cuisine, L’Espalier, tops on most Bostonians’ list for a romantic dining experience, and Legal Sea Foods, dishing up more than forty fresh fish and shellfish menu items. National chains like P.F. Chang’s, Au Bon Pain and Ben & Jerry’s are here, too.

Parks and Recreation
Boston’s Parks & Recreation Department manages and maintains open space in more than 2,200 acres of the city.

Within the neighborhood of Back Bay itself, the Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay (NABB) takes care of preserving the architectural and natural splendor of the area. This non-profit organization strives to fight neighborhood deterioration and maintain its unique character.

The neighborhood of Back Bay is adjacent to the oldest park in the United States: Boston Common. Established in 1634, the Common sprawls over fifty acres right in the heart of the city.

Along with neighboring Beacon Hill, Back Bay is one of Boston's two most prestigious residential neighborhoods. It’s easy to understand why once you’ve learned about all of its attractions and amenities. Living in Back Bay means living among its distinctive Victorian brownstone homes, fashionable art galleries, boutiques and eateries, while enjoying its close proximity to Boston Common and many other parks and open spaces.

Schools, Health, Transportation
In addition to numerous public and private elementary, middle and high schools, Back Bay is home to the Boston Architectural College and Berklee College of Music.

Some of the hospitals and medical centers near Back Bay include Children’s Hospital Boston, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital.

As one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, Boston provides all of the public transportation one could want or need. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) light rail and bus transit services are easily accessible in Back Bay; Boston’s Logan Airport is just five miles away.
